Tyler Dunn ’25, Golf

When you compete in a sport that includes both individual and team components being part of the team can be tricky. But Tyler Dunn doesn’t let the individual component of golf distract him from rooting for his Miner teammates. That dedication to team, as well as his hard work, is why Tyler was named the September 2022 boys golf Athlete of the Month.

Coach Joe Taylor said Tyler encourages the other players on the team and shows them how practicing hard can lead to positive results. One way he encourages them is cheering them on during putting drills, especially their favorite called 9-Point in which everyone participates.

“Even though it is a competition, Tyler is always rooting on his fellow players, particularly the freshmen, which is really appreciated,” Taylor said.

Coach Taylor said Tyler has a good understanding of what areas of his game need improvement and works hard, often practicing early in the mornings before tournaments. Time he put in as resulted in dramatic improvements in his distance and accuracy, Taylor said.

“In our tournament at Thorncreek, Tyler was having a great round and just needed to make a good score on the last hole to shoot his high school-best round. Unfortunately, the last hole did not turn out well at all. When he was finished, Tyler took a moment for himself, then removed his hat, smiled and warmly congratulated his fellow players. That really showed Tyler’s character..”
